For a number of reasons I won’t get into, I’ve had some major winter blues. The holidays weren’t ideal, but I had a pretty killer New Year with genuine peeps. Since then I’ve been facing January, that awkward month where the streets are grey and Christmas clearance lingers. Depressing, right? Instead of eating my feelings and dreaming of Spring, I decided to plan a staycation.
I asked my boyfriend, Adam, his thoughts and he immediately suggested Mohegan Sun. With some travel already planned later this year, I was hesitant to fly anywhere sunny on a budget. Little did I know, Mohegan Sun is a Casino Resort only two hours away in beautiful Connecticut. I’ve never been to Connecticut, nor am I gambler, so his idea definitely peaked my interest.
I’m not usually a resort kinda guy, but after a rough couple weeks, the inclusivity of everything was very appealing; all the excitement is literally a short walk from the hotel room and you never have to venture out in the cold! We reached out to Mohegan Sun and they gave us the royal treatment. Fast forward to our arrival and handing our keys to the valet. Check-in was a breeze, VIP-style with bubbly in hand. We were escorted to our room on the 21st floor, that had gorgeous views of the river and great outdoors. Did I mention Connecticut is absolutely beautiful?!
The next 48 hours were probably the most fun I’ve had as an adult in a long time. I regularly do things that I enjoy, but this was just a different feeling overall, almost like being a teenager again. With everything you could possibly need at our fingertips, we hit the ground running! We followed mysteriously lit pathways that led to all sorts of fun. We discovered a pool, shops, yummy restaurants, delicious drinks, and of course endless slot machines. Unfortunately I don’t have any card playing skills so I stayed clear of most everything else. I won’t lie, the bright lights, the sounds of gambling, and the large number of people created the perfect hype to keep spirits high … oh and free drinks on the casino floor probably helped too 😀
I won’t lie, most of the calories consumed on this trip were primarily from booze. However, we did make time for real food along the way. Some restaurants to check out include:
- Dillon’s Candy Bar – The name speaks for itself
- Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana – Margherita Pizza w/ a House Salad
- Imus Ranch Coffee – Morning Cold Brew for the win
- Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville – Sit by the bar, ask for Leslie, and order a Perfect Margarita
- Seasons Buffet – Perfect for breakfast with a hangover 😛
- The Lansdowne Pub – Bangers & Mash w/ a delicious beer
- Ben & Jerry’s – Grab a Hot Fudge Sundae at midnight
- Chick-Fil-A – Great for a quick snack in-between slots
Overall, Mohegan Sun was perfect for a quick staycation. I learned that I still have it in me to stay awake until 2 a.m.! If you’re looking to unwind with minimal responsibility, I highly recommend a resort-eque destination like Mohegan Sun. Although family friendly, a place like Mohegan Sun caters to adults and ensures fun for everyone. One thing I never got to try was their spa, but it’s definitely on the radar for our next visit.
I’m excited to say that our staycation was a success and served its purpose of dragging me out of my funk. I left feeling refreshed and ready to take on the Snow Mizer. Are you experiencing the winter blues or cabin fever? How are you combating it?! Share below 🙂
